Weather prediction is a tough job. Without the proper technology, this job is nearly impossible. Pakistan met department has a history of predicting wrong weather. It isn’t the fault of people sitting in the department, but the lack of technology is to blame.
For example, the met department in Karachi is still equipped with a decades old radar system that has been scrapped in most parts of the world. But the good news is that the met department is finally getting an upgraded C-band Dopper radar.
With the new radar, the met department will be better equipped to predict the weather. It will allow weather forecasters to predict the path of severe weather at the range of 450km around Karachi.
The new weather system will also help the met department to provide better rainfall estimates which are very important for a country like Pakistan which strives on agriculture. The rainfall will now also be predicted in centimeters and millimeters.
The radar will be installed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency at a price tag of Rs. 1.8 billion.
