The iconic Yahoo Messenger is shutting down after 20 years

Since the beginning of the internet age, Yahoo Messenger was one of the most popular instant messenger applications in the world beside MSN messenger and ICQ.

Instant messaging applications were regarded as the most revolutionary pieces of software around 20 years ago before the emergence of social media websites.

And Yahoo Messenger was the second most popular instant messaging application after ICQ. However, with the rise of applications like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, and others, the instant messaging apps of the 90s have become obsolete.

With very little user base left for Yahoo Messenger, the company has finally decided to shut it down for good after nearly 20 years of operation.

Yahoo is working on a new messenger

But Yahoo has also got good news for its loyal fans. The company is actively working on a new communications-based app that will be optimized for the 21st-century consumer.

This new platform is called Squirrel. Yahoo describes the new application as an organized group chat platform and is currently testing it. If you are interested, you can request access to the beta and test it out yourself too.

For those of you who are still using Yahoo mail, your Yahoo ID will keep working for other Yahoo services such as Yahoo Mail.
