After numerous delays in the inauguration, the new Islamabad International Airport was finally officially inaugurated today by the Prime Minister of Pakistan along with other notable figures from Pakistan.
The new Islamabad International Aiport is now one of Asia’s biggest and major aviation hubs. The airport was designed by Aeroports de Paris Ingenierie, a French company and CGP Corporation of Singapore.
To celebrate the opening of the airport, Pakistan International Airlines had scheduled a special flight from Karachi that landed at the new airport at 11 AM today. The same plane also departed from the airport towards Karachi at 12:30 pm. A special memorabilia was awarded to passengers of this historic flight.
The New Islamabad International Airport is equipped with air traffic control complex, fuel farm, cargo terminal, fire, crash, and rescue facility and more allowing it to handle all types of aircraft including the titanic Airbus A380, Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A350 XWB aircrafts
A significant portion of the land of the airport has been given to duty-free shops, food courts, convention center, coffee shops, 5-star hotel, shopping mall, business center, theme park, golf course, and other leisure facilities.
The airport took almost 11 years to be completed. The construction began in 2007 with the groundbreaking in April. It is also equipped with all the latest facilities used in airports around the world such as 15 contact bays and passengers boarding bridges including 5 domestic and 9 international and 1 swing gate. There are also 13 parking bays for both international and domestic flights with 3 additional parking bays dedicated to cargo.
The main car parking area for the passengers of the airport has a capacity of 2,200 vehicles with 9 entrances and 9 exits equipped with toll booths. Other facilities include Telecom Services Building, Bachelor Officer Quarters, Medical/Trauma Center, Mosque, Civil Aviation Authority Staff Accommodation, 2 Petrol Pumps (Airside & Landside), Police Station, Security Watch Towers, Out House, Cargo Complex, Custom Cargo Building, Airport Operation Control Center GED North / Log Centre North & MT, Fire Crash Rescue Building (FCR), Satellite Fire Station, Radio-Radar Building (RRB), Telecom Services Building, ASF Camp, 132 KVA Grid Station. Water Works, and Sewerage Treatment Plant.
The New Islamabad International Airport will become fully functional starting May 3rd.
