At the same time of the match, hundreds of protestors gathered outside the stadium wearing black T-shirts and carrying black balloons shouting slogans against IPL.

The protestors demanded the cancellation of IPL matches held in Chennai until their demands were met. The protests were part of a disputed accord with neighboring Karnataka on how to share the water from Cauvery river in a state that would likely suffer from drought.

Before the IPL matches were scheduled to take place in Chennai, the state government had recommended moving the matches to somewhere else but the government agreed to provide security.
