Samsung unveils Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus – Here’s everything you need to know

The new phone packs a powerful camera and processor in a familiar body

Samsung finally unveiled its latest flagship phones the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus last night. To celebrate the launch of world’s most sought out phone, we have put together a short guide to everything that you need to know about the new phones.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 features a powerful new camera, a new processor, better battery and a minor design change. Scroll through and read about all the new key features including the improved rear camera, virtual assistant, AR Emojis and more.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Design

The Samsung Galaxy S9 looks virtually similar to last year’s Galaxy S8 except for a minor change at the back of the body. Samsung has improved the design slightly by moving the fingerprint sensor.

The fingerprint reader which was located next to the camera in the S8 is now located ideally below the new camera. Otherwise, the phone has the same glass back, slim bezels, and rounded display on the front as on the S8.

Unlike other top phones in the market, Samsung is sticking to keeping the 3.5mm headphones jack on the new phones. The jack is now located at the bottom edge of the phone at the left side.

Another tweak on the phone is the addition of a new speaker on the top of the phone which makes the phone much louder than the previous edition.  Samsung Galaxy S9 also now features Dolby ATMOS surround sound technology.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Screen

As with the rest of the design, Samsung has decided to play safe with the screen as well. The Galaxy S9 features the same infinity display design that was on Galaxy S8 and Note 8.

The only real change on the screen is that it now has smaller upper and lower bezels than the previous edition. The QHD + Super AMOLED 5.8-inch screen supports a resolution of 1440 x 2960 equalling 567 pixels per inch.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Camera

Perhaps the biggest upgrade of the phone is its new and advanced camera. Samsung Galaxy S9 features a single-lens rear camera with plenty of improvements over the past editions. Here’s a summarized edition of all the new features of the camera:

  • Super-Slow-Motion feature designed to capture key moments of action
  • Super-Slow allows you to capture video in 1080p, 720p, and 480fps.
  • A new lens that significantly improves low-light photography
  • S9 is capable of taking 12 images in quick succession to remove noise and improve photo

There’s now a 12MP rear sensor featuring image stabilization and more features than we can count. One of the biggest upgraded features of the camera is the new dual-aperture technology. This feature allows the camera to automatically adjust the aperture depending on the environment and scene you are about to shoot.

So for example, if you are shooting in a bright daylight, the camera automatically adjusts the light below 100 lux. Similarly, if its dark, the camera adjusts the light automatically for the perfect shot.

The camera now also offers a super slow-mo feature which is a huge improvement over the last edition. You can now shoot at 960 frames per second which is 4x better than Galaxy S8.

On the front, Samsung has added an 8MP camera with a f/1.7 aperture. The camera features facial recognition just like Apple’s Face ID.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Battery

The Samsung Galaxy S9 features the same 3,000mAh cell battery from S8 but with little improvements added on the side. The battery now features improve power efficiency making it last longer every session.

The battery also features wireless charging and fast charging just like the previous phone.

Samsung Galaxy S9 other features

Samsung has made its front end camera capable of Augmented Reality. The phone is currently making the best use of this technology by allowing you to create a 3D avatar of yourself on the phone using up to 18 different facial expressions.

The technology works quite similar to iPhone X’s Animoji but instead of an emoji, you make a character that represents you. You can then customize this character with various presets.

Additionally, the improved virtual assistant of the phone now lets you point the camera at things and get search results and even on the go translations. For example, if you point the camera on food with Bixby turned on, the phone will instantly show you how many calories it has.

Pointing the camera at a foreign language will instantly translate it on your screen.
