Remembering Noor Jehan

Pakistan’s legendary actress and vocalist, Malika-e-Tarannum, Noor Jehan is being remembered today on her 16th death anniversary.

Noor Jehan was one of the best and greatest of singers in her time in South Asia. She was loved by millions in the world and received the honorary title of Malika-e-Tarannum.

Her real name was Allah Wasai. She was born on September 21, 1926, to a family of musicians based in Kasur, Punjab.

She has recorded around 10,000 songs in different languages that are commonly spoken in India and Pakistan. She sang in Sindhi, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and more.

Madam Noor Jehan was known throughout the South Asian region for her singing. She worked in the film industry for more than 35 years.

Noor Jehan bestowed the audience with her voice as a playback and ghazal singer.

She passed away on December 23, 2000, due to heart failure and is buried in Karachi
